The beauty business seems to get stronger in recessions. Go figure. Probably people become depressed in recessions and slow economies and buy small items to cheer themselves up. The beauty business offers many products that are advertised to improve appearance and social status. Many products are offered at low enough prices to have mass appeal. Even higher priced luxury products do well as consumers splurge on beauty products that improve self-esteem.

Here’s a interesting fun fact. In most recessions many small luxury items sell unexpectedly well. For example, lipstick sales had a great year in 2011. Nail polish is this recession’s and long drawn out slow recovery’s counterintuitive retail success, with a sales surge of 65 percent since mid-2008. This is indicative of the health of the beauty business overall. It wss strong in 2011, setting sight for an even better 2012.

Ever Heard of a Blow Dry Bar? It’s a Hot Business

One of the newest hot trends are blow-dry bars. No kidding. Women shell out $35 to have their hair wetted down then blown dry by a professional hairdresser. Leading the way, according to AnythingResearch, are cosmetology and barber schools, which represented 2011′s fastest-growing industry. With the National Association of Barber Boards of America estimating over a 10 percent increase in the number of barber shops in the last two years, someone had to be around to train all those new barbers and hair stylists.

Men have become important to the beauty industry. Men are increasingly a big part of beauty industry revenues. MindBranch research shows global sales of male-specific beauty products will grow from $19.7 billion in 2009 to $28 billion by 2014. Overall male consumption of beauty products is forecast to hit $85 billion by 2014.

So if you’re having a hard time making money during this slow economy perhaps you’re in the wrong business. Take a good hard look at the beauty industry. These days men and women seem conditioned to desire and purchase products and services that are centered on projecting, at least in their eyes, a more beautiful and pampered self.

Now excuse me. I’m feeling a little down today. I think I’ll go out and get a pedicure.

Our Taiwanese friends at NMA World Edition are at it again with their animated takes on important current political events. The latest wacky animated interpretation is of Chinese President Hu Jintao visiting President Obama in the White House and being given the royal tour.

Our slightly insane friends at NMA stay right on top of political affairs and are following the actions of one Sarah Palin. Could it be they see Ms. Palin challenging Obama for his oval office in 2012? Watch this video and see.

It seems like Palin is the favorite in a sguare off with President Obama in a mudwrestling contest. Take your pick. Will it be Obama, Palin, or Hu Jintao in the Whitehouse after the 2012 elections? Oh, you say, Hu Jintao is not qualified to take over the oval office as he is not a US citizen? Who said anything about an election? The way things are going the US may have to use the Whitehouse as collateral to keep the Chinese buying US bonds. Then when you can no longer pay they take it away.

In yet another sign that Chinese officials are willing to use Chinese growing economic muscle China is set to halt exports to the United States of some key minerals. China has already halted exports of rare Earth minerals to Japan, apparently due to a disagreement over a Chinese ship captain who was detained by the Japanese Navy.

The Chinese action involves stopping the export of rare earth minerals that are crucial to manufacturing many advanced products including almost all high tech products such as computers and cell phones. This action seems certain to further ratchet up already rising trade and currency tensions with the West.

The West, especially the United States, has still not accepted nor gotten used to China’s recently developed economic might. United States officials still lecture China about their currency policies, human rights concerns, their military build up, and a wide range of other issues. The Chinese resent such lectures, especially from high level representatives of a nation that has become recklessly mired in debt and is a heavy debtor to China.

An example of such unwelcome lectures is the concern expressed by the US Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates over an increase in China’s defense spending. Secretary Gates has been highly critical of China’s military expansion even though China still spends only approximately 10% of the annual funds spent by the United States on its own military establishment. The Chinese rightly feel that an expansion of their military capabilities is only natural as they gain economic strength. After all, from the Chinese point of view, they must protect their supply lines and business interests which increasingly extend far from Chinese borders.

The recent halt of rare earth minerals exports is sure to ratchet up increasing tensions between the United States and China on a growing list of issues. There is a grave danger here. Should the US and China enter into a full scale trade war the collateral damage to the world economy would be severe.

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico is one of the most violent cities on earth. About 5,000 people have been slaughtered in Ciudad Juarez in the past 27 months. It is a destroyed city where 25 percent of the houses are abandoned and 40 percent of the businesses have closed. There were 2,600 murders last year and killings have increased this year.

Even though the Mexican government of President Felipe Calderon has sent a large number of Mexican Army troops into Juarez to assist local police in reducing violence, drug related violence continues to escalate. One major problem facing law enforcement efforts is that many politicians, army troops at all levels, and the police are on the drug cartel’s payroll. The huge sums of money controlled by the drug cartel are totally corrupting as they find their way into every level of society on both sides of the Mexican – United States border.

The U.S. approach to the killings in Mexico is to continue with the same failed policies of the War on Drugs. The US government never looks at an economic reason, just as the consequences of our free trade treaty (NAFTA) are never brought up. The effects wrought by NAFTA launched one of the largest human migrations in the world as poor Mexicans fled collapsing industry and agriculture. With NAFTA American corporations simply had a huge market for American crops and products, such as corn and chickens, as well as a source of very cheap labor. Border Patrol statistics show that the number of Mexicans entering the U.S. illegally skyrocketed within two years of the passage of NAFTA.

Even after 40 years of the war on drugs the American market has become the largest market for illegal drugs in the world. The war on drugs has actually brought larger amounts of higher quality drugs to the market at lower prices. The profits to Mexican drug cartels in supplying this market are estimated to be on the order of $30-$50 billion a year. The drug cartels have become stronger and more violent in defending and expanding this source of income.

In an America that allows other drugs, such as tobacco, alcohol, and an abundance of prescription medicine happy pills to be freely distributed the war on drugs such as marijuana and cocaine really doesn’t make any sense. One unintended consequence of the war on drugs is that America now has the largest prison population in terms of the percentage of Americans incarcerated of any nation in the world.

Many of those incarcerated are non-violent offenders who have been arrested for possessing small amounts of illegal drugs for personal use. The annual cost of housing low level nonviolent offenders in local, state and federal prisons is in the multi-billions of dollars. In an economy where local and state governments are struggling to meet expenses, the cost of incarcerating low level drug offenders is not inconsequential.

It really is time for the United States to take a realistic view as to how NAFTA and other economic factors play into the explosion of violence in Ciudad Juarez, and other Mexican and American border towns. The violence is no longer confined to just Mexico. Drug related violence is now a serious problem in many American cities as is the corruption that the flow of drug money brings.

For additional interesting information about why the war on drugs is such a failure, yet the American government refuses to admit that failure, take a look at this article about the consequences of the drug trade in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. and how drug related income has become so important to the Mexican economy as Mexican farming and business communities struggle under changes brought about by NAFTA.

A Lebanese Muslin man, Ali Hussain Sibat, charged with sorcery and sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia, is scheduled to be beheaded on Friday, April 2, 2010, the man’s lawyer said Wednesday. The United States State Department and president Obama seem to have little if anything to say on the issue as the US continues to kowtow to a nation that routinely violates human rights.

Sibat, the father of five young children, is the former host of a popular call in entertainment show that aired on the Beirut based satellite TV channel “Sheherazade.” According to his lawyer, Sibat would predict the future and give out advice to his TV audience.

Sibat’s attorney told CNN her client was arrested by Saudi Arabia’s religious police (known as the Mutawa’een) and charged with sorcery while visiting the country in May 2008. Sibat was in Saudi Arabia to perform the Islamic religious pilgrimage known as Umra.

Saudia Arabia is considered by the United States to be one of its strongest allies and friends in the Mideast region. This stated “friendship” even survived the fact that 15 of the 19 hard core airplane hijacking al Qaeda terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 were from Saudi Arabia. What a friendship.

The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terrorism. It invaded Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists. So let’s get this straight. The majority of the terrorist were from Saudi Arabia but due to the special friendship extended to Saudi Arabia by the United States we attack the Taliban in Afghanistan rather than by going directly to the source of the terrorist network. There is no doubt that much of the funding received by Al Qaeda originates in Saudi Arabia. Now, some nine years after the 9/11 attacks we are still fighting the Taliban while continuing to Kowtow to Saudi Arabia.

Further evidence of the special relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia was given in April 2009 as during his visit to Saudi Arabia President Obama greeted the king with a full bow from the waist, a move one commentator described as a violation of protocol and not worthy of the office president Obama holds. This show of respect and servitude may not have been a complete kowtow but it came darn close.

“I am quite certain that this is not the protocol, and is most unbecoming a president of the United States,” writes Clarice Feldman in an American Thinker commentary. To see the bow watch to video. The bow (sure looks like a deep bow to me) takes place about 58 seconds in.

We should keep in mind that while the United States makes a lot of worldwide noise about promoting freedom and democracy that when it comes to protecting what we perceive as our own interests we are prepared to be quite flexible in kowtowing to Saudi Arabia and other despotic regimes around the world. Saudi Arabia has one of the most regressive, medieval in nature, cruel, and hypocritical regimes of any country in the world, yet we consider them to be close allies and good friends. Hypocrisy indeed. That is one area in which the United States is most certainly a world leader.

Nothing could provide a better example of our willingness to look the other way and give Saudi Arabia a free pass on human rights than our State Department’s silence on the Sibat beheading issue. Perhaps it’s only because Sibat is a Lebanese citizen and we are not on the best of terms with Lebanon. However, it seems to me that a nation that preaches freedom, democracy, and justice at every opportunity should not remain silent when one of its so-called friends is about to execute a man by cutting off his head for the offense of sorcery.

Sorcery? Unfortunately, I am not kidding, as outdated the term should be in the 21st century. However, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, our dear friend in the Mideast, still operates with one foot set firmly in the past of over 1000 years ago and the other foot planted in oil fields that feed an United States addiction. Apparently and sadly, our addiction for Saudi Arabian oil trumps any concern that we may have over human right issues and the fact that it was Saudi Arabian citizens that led the 9/11 attack against the United States.

As long as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has oil to sell to the United States I expect that US politicians will continue to kowtow to, support, and defend the Saudi Arabian government, no matter how repressive and depraved the royal family and government may be.

Today a domestic terrorist flew his light aircraft into a seven story office building in Austin Texas that housed a tax office for the Internal Revenue Service. Our government officials expressed great relief that the attack was not carried out by Al Qaeda or some other foreign terrorist group and was therefore deemed not to be a terrorist act.

While they are correct in that the attack was not carried out by Al Qaeda the initial public statements were incorrect in not identifying the act as terrorism. The attack upon the IRS was carried out by something much worse, a domestic terrorist. The pilot of the aircraft had apparently earlier torched his house in an Austin subdivision and left behind a suicide note saying that he was mad as hell at his tax bill, and the national health care stalemate, and the bailout helping corporations rather than people. He opposed the federal government and our laws and flew an airplane into a federal occupied building housing an IRS tax unit to express his extreme anger at the United States government. If that’s not an act of domestic terrorism, then what is?

It is actually foolish and wrong for government officials and media talking heads to breathe a sigh of relief because the pilot was not a member of Al Qaeda. The fact that he is one of ours, a homegrown terrorist, is far worse. Consider the actions of homegrown terrorists at Oklahoma City, Virginia Tech, Columbine, and now a government occupied office building in Austin, Texas. Then consider how many millions of Americans own guns, are former military members trained in explosives and warfare, are fed up with the way our government is currently working, resent the bailout of wealthy bankers and corporate executives at the expense of the tax payer, and who are mad as hell about it all and near some kind of breaking point.

It is a sad state of affairs when government officials who are charged with protecting United States citizens from terrorist acts won’t even call an act by a homegrown terrorist, such as flying an aircraft into an office building, an act of terror. Perhaps their tune will change as more facts are known. Then an over reaction will probably occur. We may not be too far removed from being required to get a government permit to travel beyond our front yards.

The fact is that the risk of domestic terrorism is far greater than that of Al Qaeda being able to launch another terrorist attack on United States soil. An additional risk, as the government attempts to prevent further acts of domestic terror, even though the government will not publicly acknowledge domestic terrorist attacks as terrorist attacks, is that individual freedoms are further eroded due to a police state mentality of surveillance and regulation.

While I disagree with president Obama on a number of issues, especially the escalation of the war in Afghanistan, I feel that his statement about the recent Supreme Court decision regarding election funding is spot on.

Obama’s statement on the issue was triggered by a 5-4 ruling by the court’s justices on Thursday, January 21, 2010, that removed long-standing campaign finance limits and allowed corporations to spend freely in campaigns for president and Congress as well as in local elections. In the ruling, the court’s conservative majority said the limits had violated corporations’ constitutional right to free speech.

“This ruling opens the floodgates for an unlimited amount of special interest money into our democracy,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. “It gives the special interest lobbyists new leverage to spend millions on advertising to persuade elected officials to vote their way — or to punish those who don’t. This ruling strikes at democracy itself,” Obama said.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the Supreme Court’s decision is that it grants corporations, that are definitely not individuals, constitutional rights to free speech. It is deeply disturbing that the Supreme Court, which is tasked with protecting American’s constitutional rights, should extend the right to free speech to legal entities such as corporations that clearly were not intended to have such rights by our founding fathers.

The decision rolls back all of the campaign funding laws in the American democracy that were designed to protect our democracy against the efforts of special interest groups, such as corporations and their lobbyists. Now with the 5 to 4 Supreme Court ruling, the floodgates are open for unlimited amounts of cash being used to buy politicians and to influence the voting process through TV advertising and other means.

President Obama’s statement that the decision is a direct blow to democracy is absolutely the truth. In the United States, much of the control of our government has already passed to special interest groups who use lobbyist and the use of cash to influence legislation that is favorable to their special interests. Now that the Supreme Court has opened the financial floodgates for corporate cash to flow through In unlimited amounts you can bet your bottom dollar that’s the corrupting influence of money will be felt throughout the political system.

January 21, 2010, is a sad day in American history. With our democracy already under severe attack by special interest groups the Supreme Court ruling May well be the death blow to any semblance of democracy within the American form of government. It is hard to believe that the five members of the Supreme Court who voted in favor of a corporation being granted constitutional rights to free speech, thereby giving them the ability to use unlimited amounts of cash to influence legislation designed for their benefit at the expense of the public, were thinking of protecting the Constitution.

One has to wonder if the wide spread corruption within our government has spread even to the highest court in the land. In my opinion, this five to four Supreme Court decision could not possibly be based upon the proper interpretation of the law of the land, but upon the influence that lobbyist groups already have upon certain Supreme Court justices.

Sadly, American democracy has become more like fascism than most Americans would care to admit. The recent Supreme Court decision will only make matters far worse as it places a tremendous amount of political power in the hands of corporations that will use that power to punish those politicians whose policies they disagree with and to reward those who help them to pass legislation favorable to their interests. The unsavory relationship between corporations and politicians that the Supreme Court decision will lead to is the very definition of fascism.

Today is an extremely important day for Democrats in Massachusetts, and for that matter across the nation. Within just a few hours the results of the Senate race between Democrat Martha Coakley and Republican Scott Brown, a former Cosmo nude model of all things, will be known. The political upset of the last century may be in the making.

Democrats now are operating under the assumption that Democrat Martha Coakley will lose today’s election in Massachusetts to fill Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. In the debate over how Democrats could possibly lose the race — which has major repercussions for President Obama’s agenda — Coakley herself is taking more and more of the blame. Some Democrats and liberals aren’t waiting for the polls to close to turn against Coakley and her campaign.

Ted Kennedy occupied the Massachusetts Senate seat for more than 40 years. Sen. Kennedy was at the head of a political juggernaut machine in Massachusetts. When former Atty. Gen. Martha Coakley won the Democratic primary election it was believed by most political observers that she would be a shoe in to win the general election. After all, Scott Brown was basically a throwaway candidate. The Republican powers that be in Massachusetts did not want to sacrifice a leading candidate to a race that they felt was not winnable. So initially, Scott Brown was not expected to even come close to winning the election, much less becoming a Republican senator in a heavily Democratic district of the state.

Should Martha Coakley lose the Democratic Senate seat the implications for president Obama and his agenda will be profound. The Democrats would lose their 60 vote cram down margin in the Senate and would likely lose their ability to pass even the present health care legislation. In addition, losing Ted Kennedy’s former Senate seat would put every incumbent Democrat on notice that they to are at risk for the 2010 and 2012 election cycle.

In fact, many political pundits would go so far as to say that the loss of the Democratic Massachusetts Senate seat would be the beginning of the end for not only president Obama’s aggressive agenda, but would signal that many American voters are absolutely angry at the direction that the country has been taking under the Obama administration.

While many Democrats will point the finger at Martha Coakley for running a poor campaign the reasons for her loss, should she lose, probably run deeper than that. The poor economy and the seemingly control of the Obama administration by the hated bankers, the fear and resentment surrounding Obama’s health care bill, the bail out of AIG, the bail out of the automobile industry, and a general feeling that president Obama has fallen far short of keeping his campaign promises are all indicators that the Democrats have dropped the ball and stand to lose big time in the midterm elections.

It is about four in the afternoon as I write this article. I expect that by nine o’clock or so this evening the results of the Massachusetts election for Ted Kennedy’s former Senate seat will be known. For team Obama and all Democrats the next few hours must be nervous ones indeed. A Republican upset in Massachusetts will invigorate a struggling Republican party. In fact, president Obama may become one of the earliest lame duck presidents on record.

Prior to the birth of the Republic of the United States of America there was concern among our Founding Fathers about the very nature of man and how a democracy leads to mob rule by its very structure. That is why after much heated discussion the United States was founded as a Republic, not as a Democracy, as many Americans believe. Fascism was never considered an attractive alternate for America. That is until power became increasingly centered in the Executive branch of government after the 9/11 attack on America.
===============================
“A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
Thomas Jefferson
===============================
The chief characteristic and distinguishing feature of a Democracy is: Rule by Omnipotent Majority. In a Democracy, The Individual, and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of The Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man.

The most common definition of a republic is a state without a monarch. In republics such as the United States and France the executive is legitimated both by a constitution and by popular sufferage. In the United States, Founding Fathers like James Madison defined republic in terms of representative democracy as opposed to only having direct democracy, and this usage is still employed by many viewing themselves as “republicans”.
===============================
“To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”
Thomas Jefferson
===============================
Our Founding Fathers were wise to not only voice their concerns about a Democracy but expressed them in the drafting of the American Constitution. Unfortunately today in America the Constitution is not very closely adhered to. The present form of government in the US is more like late stage Roman imperialism where the head of state has taken ever more real power into the Executive branch of government while congress placates the people with ever more bread and circuses.
================================
“It is important to remember that government interference always means either violent action or the threat of such action. The funds that a government spends for whatever purposes are levied by taxation. And taxes are paid because the taxpayers are afraid of offering resistance to the tax gatherers. They know that any disobedience or resistance is hopeless. As long as this is the state of affairs, the government is able to collect the money that it wants to spend. Government is in the last resort the employment of armed men… Those who are asking for more government interference are asking ultimately for more compulsion and less freedom.”
Ludwig von Mise
===================================
The mob may think it rules but the increased power of the executive branch, backed at least for now by the US military and the elite establishment that is the power behind the President (corporate America and large campaign contributors), are calling most of the shots. For example, the escalation of the war in Afghanistan is opposed by the majority of the American public but is favored by the corporations, the Pentagon, and individuals who are war profiteers.
==================================
“Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.”
Ronald Reagan
===================================

If one has to place a name on the new form of government in America one can make the case that Fascism is a closer fit than either a Republic or Democracy. The idea that America is the home of the free is still widely believed by Americans but is increasingly difficult to prove. In fascism, as in communism and socialism, the individual plays a subordinated role to the wishes of the state. The people exist to serve government. It is then in the power of government to decide which individual or group of people the government will serve and how they will be served.

You would have to be living in a different far, far, away galaxy to have not heard of the Tiger Woods car accident incident that occurred just outside his Florida multi-million dollar home five days ago.

While the accident itself proved to be minor, as were Tiger’s injuries, the incident could have not been handled worse by Tiger and his expensive high powered team of advisers. The damage to Tiger’s carefully crafted image and reputation may turn out to be not so minor. If so he could face the loss of far more than the $164 dollar fine handed out by the police for careless driving.

The fact that the accident occurred as Tiger was leaving his home at 2.25 AM immediately fueled speculation that a domestic fight of some sort had taken place. Perhaps Tiger and his beautiful wife Elan were simply up late and had run out of milk. Perhaps he was on his hurried way to a nearby 24/7 food store. After all this is the control freak oh so clean image Tiger Woods we are talking about. How could he have been storming out of the house in rage? Please Tiger, tell me it’s just not so.

However, almost instantly speculation grew that his wife had confronted him about rumors of extramarital activity that involved more than giving golfing lessons. As of this writing Tiger has been linked to two women, one who denies the allegations that she was Tiger’s mistress, the other coming forward to brag that she was.

Tiger and his team are used to only glowing reports from the media about Tiger and his considerable talent as the world’s premier golfer. Perhaps that explains why they have done such a miserable job with damage control. By at first stating that the affair was a private matter and refusing to talk to the media or even the police Tiger set the stage for even more wild speculation about what really happened.

Today Tiger Woods posts a lame sort of half ass statement on his website stating that basically the incident is a private matter and he plans to keep it that way. It is pitiful that this is the best that his team of lawyers, handlers, and PR people are able to do. Tiger needs a new team.

I have long admired Tiger Woods as a talented athlete and all around good guy as a famous celebrity. I had always thought that Tiger did an outstanding job of controlling his life and was an outstanding family man. Now I’m not so sure. It’s not that perhaps he has had an affair or two. I’m sure that he has had many opportunities to bed beautiful women while traveling about the world staying at first class hotels. It would be a challenge to any lonely far from home man to always say no when presented with frequent opportunities.

However, the disappointing aspect of this car and perhaps affair incident is that Tiger thought that he could have it only one way. He thought that the media coverage was only going to be positive no matter what he did. That he was above negative or critical questioning coverage. By not facing up to the media now he has lost control of the story. He looks like a wimp and coward, not at all like a heroic figure, as he withdraws from his own golf tournament, and refuses to make a full statement.

Tiger will learn the lesson from this incident that you can’t be one of the most public figures in the world and run and hide behind privacy when an unfavorable incident occurs. In the end the truth will emerge. If, and I say if, it turns out that Tiger did have an affair and after being confronted with the evidence the accident occurred after a fight with his wife, Tiger will take a major hit to his prestige.

At a time when this nation could use more heroes I hope that there is some simple explanation to the entire incident. However, the way Tiger has managed the incident to date I fear that another unpleasant shoe will drop with this story. Who can you trust as our nation slides ever closer to disaster if we can’t even trust Tiger Woods to come clean and tell the truth?

It is really sad to see Tiger Woods losing His cool. But then President Obama lost his in the same week by escalating the war in Afghanistan. Who can the American people trust? We need a break and some new leadership.
