American politics in the most important presidential election ever

American politics have become more toxic and dysfunctional than ever as the Republican candidates for president battle it out to see who will represent their party in the 2012 presidential election.

Mitt Romney has emerged as the front-runner having won six out of 10 states on super Tuesday. However, Romney still seems to have trouble in sealing the deal. Rick Santorum is hanging tough even though his Campaign has far less money to work with than Romney. While Romney is far ahead in the delegate count and appears destined to be the Republican Party nominee he has not created excitement among American voters.

Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul have stayed in the race although it appears that there is no way they can contest the two leaders. Both men had disappointing super Tuesday results.

Whoever eventually wins the Republican Party nomination and opposes president Obama in the 2012 General election is probably counting on gasoline prices to continue rising and for the economy to continue to struggle. Of course, no candidate would admit this but the Republicans only chance of defeating president Obama is if the economy once again begins to deteriorate and gasoline prices keep rising.

In 2012 politics in America will set new records for spending on negative ads and generally for being a nasty presidential campaign. Unless Democrats and Republicans can find ways to work together the future for America will likely deteriorate as standards of living fall nationwide.

America desperately needs statesmen rather than shortsighted politicians who work harder at becoming reelected than attending to the nation’s business. The general election campaign should be as interesting for political junkies as it is distressing for those hoping for a return to good government in the USA.
