Afghans Can Vote for Karzai or Karzai

by travelwell on November 1, 2009

Afghan presidential candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah withdrew this Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, from the upcoming runoff election, saying he believes the second election round would be as fraudulent as the first. Now Afghans have a real choice. They can vote for Karzai or Karzai. What kind of democracy is this that is consuming so much American blood and treasure?

“I want this to be an example for the future so that no one again tries to use fraud to abuse the rights of the Afghan people,” Abdullah said at a news conference announcing his not so suprising decision.

“I spoke to Karzai about the Independent Election Commission abusing its powers, but he denied it and refused to dismiss them,” he said.

“I will be available to serve country,” he said. “I am in consultations with followers … a movement for change will be there and I will lead that movement.”

“This is not in exchange for anything from anybody,” Abdullah said. “My decision was purely to give the people of afghanistan a chance to move on.”

The withdrawal of Abdullah only further complicates the United States involvement in Afghanistan. The US looks to be increasingly supporting a discredited and totally corrupt Karzai government. Americans must be asking the question – is it worth it?

The insertion of additional US troops at an estimated cost of $500,000 each at a time when the US economy is entering a depression should bring a more sober assestment of the impossible to win Afghanistan War by the Obama team. But will it?
